Remaining Relevant as a 30+ Marketer.

Don’t worry you are not going to lose your job to a 20-year-old influencer, but you have got a lot to learn.
Do you remember growing up and thinking making mix tapes was a hugely complicated and time-consuming task?  Some people did it as passion, some seemed to master it, others put those passions to work as a DJ- 10 years goes by and Spotify comes along, and anyone can put together a playlist with minimum effort- problem solved, well sort of.  But it devalues that art! The effort and skill that was put in to creating something worthwhile, but what do you do? Go on strike or get involved?
 

The move from targeted direct marketing to managing campaigns through Facebook and Instagram is similar. Don’t fear it, have a look inside that campaign engine and you will be amazed how easy it is to set up a campaign now.  All those things that were difficult before, audience selection, refining the selections to minimise wastage, working your way around the campaign selections and the tools to help you send the emails are basically done for you. Entire days spent organising selections and reviewing PowerPoint bar charts are now redundant.

OK,  I can feel a bit disgruntled since no one knows the effort that went into making the mix tapes, but, at the same time, I can appreciate the craft.  The Facebook Campaign Manager is a dream. Take some time to have a look inside- don’t leave it to your junior team. I promise you will come up with new creative ways of using it, just as 20 years ago you did the hard graft and learnt the skills you would need.
